Description

This easy homemade garlic knots recipe features soft, buttery knots made from a tender yeast dough, baked to golden perfection and brushed with rich garlic butter, Parmesan, and flaky sea salt for an irresistible appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon active-dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

For the Topping

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon finely-chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • freshly-grated Parmesan cheese (to taste)
  • flaky sea salt (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a microwave-safe bowl, stir together water, melted butter, milk, and honey until combined. Microwave for 1 minute, then continue microwaving in 15-second intervals until the mixture reaches 110°F—warm but not hot to the touch.
  2. Proof the yeast: Pour the warm liquid into a stand mixer bowl, sprinkle yeast evenly on top, stir briefly with a fork, and let it rest for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Make the dough: Add 3 1/2 cups flour, salt, and garlic powder to the yeast mixture. Mix with a dough hook on medium-low until combined, adding up to 1/2 cup more flour in 1/4 cup increments if sticky, using no more than 4 cups total. Continue mixing on low for 4-5 minutes until dough is smooth. Form dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl.
  4. First rise: Cover the bowl with a damp towel or paper towel and let the dough rise for 15 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheet: Heat oven to 400°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Shape knots: Gently roll dough into a 16-inch log with even width. Slice into 15 or 16 pieces, roll each into an 8-inch rope, tie into a knot, and place on the prepared baking sheet. Cover loosely with a kitchen towel and let rise for 15 minutes.
  7. Bake: Uncover and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Prepare garlic butter: While baking, whisk together melted butter, finely chopped parsley, and garlic powder until combined.
  9. Brush and garnish: Remove knots from oven, transfer baking sheet to a wire rack, brush immediately with garlic butter, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and flaky sea salt.
  10. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy your delicious homemade garlic knots!

  • For extra flavor, brush knots again with garlic butter just before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat for best taste.
